Gemini’s Skills are bookmarks for your AI prompts

Google has introduced an innovative feature called Skills, allowing users to bookmark AI prompts within the Chrome browser. This new functionality aims to enhance user experience by providing a straightforward way to save and reuse prompts in the Gemini AI interface.

With the Skills feature, users can create a prompt, save it for future use, and easily access it whenever needed. Google announced the rollout of this feature for desktop Chrome users today, marking an important step in integrating AI capabilities into everyday browsing.

The process is simple: while using Gemini in Chrome to write a prompt, users can save it as a Skill. These Skills are organized on a dedicated Skills page, which includes both user-created Skills and a selection of Google-suggested Skills. To launch a Skill, users need to open Gemini in Chrome, type a forward slash ("/"), and a drop-down menu will appear showcasing the available Skills. By selecting a Skill from the list, Gemini will execute the corresponding prompt, streamlining the interaction process.

Among the suggested Skills from Google are practical options like “What’s in this?” for meal preparation, a “Calendar creator,” and a “YouTube transcript” generator. There’s also a motivational Skill called “Hype it up!” designed to provide encouragement to users.

It’s important to note that, as with most generative AI systems, responses may vary even when the same prompt is used multiple times. Google acknowledges this variability, stating, “Like all AI-generated responses, results may vary slightly between runs, similar to how asking someone the same question twice might yield a differently worded answer.” This means that while the Skills have been curated for quality and reliability, users may still encounter slight differences in the outputs.

As users explore the Skills feature, they’ll need to evaluate whether Gemini will become their preferred AI tool, or if they might lean towards alternatives like ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude. Regardless of the choice of AI model, the introduction of Skills is a significant advancement in how Google leverages its browser expertise to enhance AI interactions.

While it may seem like a small improvement, the ability to bookmark and easily access Skills represents a useful convenience for users who regularly engage with AI. This feature not only simplifies the process of reusing prompts but also encourages more efficient and productive interactions with Gemini.

In conclusion, Google’s Skills feature serves as a vital tool for users aiming to streamline their AI experiences in Chrome. As the integration of AI into everyday tasks continues to evolve, features like Skills will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future of user interaction with technology.
